Hidden Figures

A successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with bricks other have thrown at her

As we approach the month of February, I had this brilliant idea to do a thread on infamous black women who made a difference throughout history and in the local community. As  the years go on, many people seem to forget the February is black history month. It’s a time to pay homage to all of the African-American men and women who made an impact on law, history, the community, sports, and any aspect of life.

I chose to do women because we are really coming together to stand up and make a difference in the lives of other people. Men are always recognized for all of their hard-work, effort, and dedication, but, what people don’t know is behind that hard-working dedicated man is an even more dedicated hard-working woman. Women make just as much, if not more of an impact on the lives of other people as well. Seeing one woman stand up and take stance to something, gives other women the confidence and courage to know that they can as well. It also let’s them know that they aren’t alone.

I was watching television the other day and notice the plethora of women who turned out for the Million Woman March. It was truly astounding. Usually, the media portrays women as walking sex objects, or bubble headed human beings who have no use on this earth other than to be used and tossed aside. This event proved all of that to be false. It showed that women are more than just good looks. Women are a population all in itself.

As we all know, Donald Trump was inaugurated this weekend and many, if not most, people declined to partake in any of the events surrounding this moment. We also know he was the motivation behind the Million Woman March. It saddens me to know that America voted for a man who cares nothing about women’s rights nor the importance it has on the community. He clearly voiced his opinions and views on women during the election, and yet many women were still the impetus for him being in office . If we really think about the class of people that rule the election, women play a major role in that.

So, the next time you start to think that you aren’t making a difference, always remember what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
